Glossary
A captive agent sells insurance for a single carrier or carrier group, often under that company's brand, and generally may not place business with competing insurers. Captive agents may be employees or contractors, and the carrier typically supplies products, rating tools and some marketing, along with rules on what agents may publish.
Captive agents usually need carrier approval for website content, lead sources and advertising. Before adding a calculator to a page, a captive agent should check the carrier's marketing policy, since some carriers require pre-approval of any third-party tool or disclaimer text.
Plan-neutral needs calculators can suit captive agents well, because they estimate coverage need without naming carriers or products. The captive agents solution page covers how they fit into a carrier-approved site.
