Calculators for clients turning 65

Medicare brokers need educational, plan-neutral tools that help people approaching 65 plan around Medicare: the Medicare IRMAA calculator for income-related surcharges on Parts B and D, when HSA contributions must stop, what long-term care could cost, and how much monthly income a lump sum can buy.

What you get

When prospects start searching

  1. 01

    The 65th birthday window

The initial enrollment period runs for seven months around the 65th birthday. Prospects start researching a year or more before it.

  2. 02

    Retiring from an employer plan

People working past 65 must decide when to leave group coverage — and when to stop HSA contributions, since enrolling in Medicare ends HSA eligibility.

  3. 03

    A high-income year

A large Roth conversion, property sale or final bonus can push income above an IRMAA threshold two years later.

  4. 04

    A parent needing care

Adult children discover that Medicare generally doesn't pay for long-term custodial care, and start planning for themselves.

  5. 05

    Annual Enrollment Period

Every October 15 to December 7, beneficiaries review Medicare Advantage and Part D options.

What does the Medicare IRMAA calculator show a beneficiary?

It takes tax filing status and modified adjusted gross income from two years earlier, finds the income-related monthly adjustment amount bracket for Part B and Part D, and shows the surcharge, the household's yearly total and how much income room is left before the next bracket. See the IRMAA calculator.

IRMAA brackets are cliffs: one dollar over a threshold triggers the whole surcharge. That makes the "income room before next bracket" result a powerful planning prompt for Roth conversions and capital gains — and a reason a Medicare client will happily talk to you in the off-season. Life-changing events such as retirement can be reported to Social Security on form SSA-44.

How do Medicare marketing rules affect calculators on a broker site?

Calculators that educate without naming plans or benefits are generally treated as educational content, but anything that markets Medicare Advantage or Part D plans falls under the CMS Medicare Communications and Marketing Guidelines — including the third-party marketing organization (TPMO) disclaimer where it applies and scope-of-appointment rules. The CY2027 rule changed scope-of-appointment timing, so check the current guidance.

Keep calculator pages plan-neutral, add your TPMO disclaimer where your pages market plans, and keep consent language for calls and texts specific. See the CMS guidelines (opens in a new tab) and our season guide.

FAQ

Questions agencies ask

Answers first, details after.

Is there a Medicare calculator available?

Yes — the Medicare IRMAA calculator estimates Part B and Part D income-related surcharges. It is educational and plan-neutral by design. Alongside it, three live calculators serve Medicare-age clients: HSA contribution limits (which stop at Medicare enrollment), long-term care costs and immediate annuity income.

Will you ever build a Medicare plan comparison?

We have no plans to compare Medicare Advantage or Part D plans. Plan comparisons carry specific CMS marketing requirements and depend on plan data that changes every year; our tools stay educational and plan-neutral so brokers can use them around the year.

Do I need the TPMO disclaimer on a calculator page?

If the page markets Medicare Advantage or Part D plans and you are a third-party marketing organization under CMS rules, the disclaimer requirements apply to that page. A purely educational calculator page may not trigger it, but many brokers include it site-wide; check with your compliance contact and carriers.

Can I call people who use these calculators?

Only with appropriate consent, and Medicare adds its own rules on unsolicited contact and appointments. The lead form records consent with the submission; your consent language and contact practices must meet TCPA and CMS requirements. Our lead consent guide is a starting point, not legal advice.

Why does the HSA contribution calculator matter at 65?

Because enrolling in any part of Medicare ends eligibility to contribute to an HSA, and Part A enrollment can be backdated up to six months for people who apply after 65. People still working at 65 often don't know this, and it is a valuable conversation opener.

Does Medicare pay for long-term care?

Medicare generally covers limited skilled nursing or home health care after a qualifying event, not long-term custodial care such as help with bathing or dressing over months or years. The long-term care calculator helps a client see the size of that gap.

Will the calculators work in Spanish for my Medicare clients?

Yes. All calculators run in Spanish, and also in English, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and Arabic; the visitor chooses inside the widget.

Which plan includes these tools?

Every plan, including the free Producer plan, which embeds up to 5 calculators. Agency at $150 a month raises that limit and adds webhooks, with a 14-day free trial.
