Auto insurance
Uninsured motorist (UM) coverage pays for the policyholder's injuries, and in some states property damage, when an at-fault driver has no insurance or is a hit-and-run driver. Underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage applies when the at-fault driver's limits are too low. Availability, required offers and rejection rules differ by state.
UM/UIM protects the client from other drivers' choices, which makes it easy to explain and easy to underbuy. Many states require insurers to offer it and require a signed rejection to decline it, so agencies need a clear file trail when a client waives or lowers it.
Producers often recommend matching UM/UIM limits to the client's own liability limits. When an auto lead shows high liability limits but minimum UM, the mismatch itself is a worthwhile talking point.
