Health insurance & HSAs
Critical illness insurance pays a lump sum if the insured is diagnosed with a covered condition, such as certain cancers, a heart attack or a stroke. The money can be spent on anything, from deductibles to lost income, which makes it a supplement to health and disability coverage rather than a substitute for either.
Critical illness is a common worksite and cross-sell product, especially alongside high-deductible health plans where a diagnosis can mean a large out-of-pocket bill early in the year. Policy definitions of each covered illness, and any pre-existing condition exclusions, vary by carrier and state.
The critical illness calculator does this math with the prospect's own numbers. Today, an HSA-versus-traditional-plan lead that shows a high deductible and modest savings is a natural opening to discuss a lump-sum benefit, without promising that any product will cover a particular diagnosis.
