Life insurance
Cash surrender value is the amount a policyowner receives if they cancel a permanent life insurance policy or an annuity before it matures. It equals the accumulated cash or account value minus any surrender charges and outstanding loans, and it is usually lower than the headline cash value in early years.
Clients often confuse cash value with what they can actually walk away with. The difference is the surrender charge schedule plus any policy loans, and it can be large in the first several years. Replacement conversations, where a client is considering dropping an old policy, should always start with the true surrender figure.
The same concept shows up in annuities. The variable annuity calculator returns both an Account Value and a Surrender Value, using the Surrender Charge (%) the visitor enters, so the prospect sees what leaving early would cost before a producer ever raises it.
