Disability & long-term care
Own-occupation is a definition of disability under which the insured is considered disabled if they cannot perform the material duties of their own specific occupation, even if they could work in another field. It is broader and more expensive than an any-occupation definition, and is valued most by physicians, dentists and other specialists.
Definitions decide claims. Two policies with the same monthly benefit can behave very differently if one switches from own-occupation to any-occupation after a set number of years. Producers should read the definition language with the client rather than summarizing it as a label.
The disability calculator explains own-occupation versus any-occupation in its Definitions block, so a visitor arrives knowing the distinction exists. The calculator sizes the benefit; it does not judge which definition a carrier will offer an occupation class.
