Health insurance & HSAs
A health savings account (HSA) is a tax-advantaged account for medical costs that is available only to people covered by a qualifying high-deductible health plan. Contributions can be tax-deductible, growth is untaxed, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free. Unused money rolls over every year and stays with the owner.
HSAs link health insurance to retirement planning, which is why they show up in benefits enrollment, small-group sales and Medicare-transition conversations. Once someone enrolls in Medicare they can no longer contribute, but they can keep spending the balance on qualified expenses.
Three live calculators cover the account: the HSA contribution calculator works out how much room is left this year, HSA savings projects growth, and HSA versus traditional plan compares total costs. The contribution limit is set annually by the IRS, so the calculator, not the copy, is the place to check the current figure.
