Graded death benefit

A graded death benefit limits what a life policy pays if the insured dies of natural causes during the first policy years, often returning premiums plus interest or a partial benefit instead of the full face amount. Accidental deaths are usually paid in full from day one. It is common on guaranteed or simplified-issue final expense plans.

Graded and modified benefits are how carriers offer coverage to applicants they would otherwise decline. The trade-off must be explained clearly at the point of sale, because a family that discovers the waiting period only after a death will feel misled, and complaints in this market draw regulator attention.

Agents should check each carrier's exact schedule, since the length of the graded period and the payout in each year vary by product and state. A needs estimate from a calculator says nothing about which benefit structure an applicant will qualify for; that is decided in underwriting.
